How to deal with those schoolyard dramas

Friday, January 7, 2011

Ever felt like you're the only one being bullied? Or that rumour is the first in history? You can relax knowing that you're not the only one.

Even we DOLLY girls have battled through 'em! Here are five of the world's most common schoolyard dramas and advice on dealing with them — straight from the mouths of the DOLLY team.

What to do when …

Your friends are peer-pressuring you
A good friend will always want the best for you and respect your decisions. If a friend is pressuring you to do something you don't believe in or may get you in trouble, should they really be considered a friend? Let them know it's not something you want to do and ask that they respect your decision. A true friend will always understand.

You've been kicked out of the group
There are many reasons people decided to "kick" someone out of their group — and none of them are really about you. Bullies like to put others down, it makes them feel better. The majority of the time it's not something you've done wrong but insecurities of the bullies. Your group could feel threatened by you, socially or academically, and believe that the only way to make themselves feel better, is by removing you from their social circle.

If it happens to you, simply take some time out from your group. Spend some time catching up with old friends or cheer on your guy mates at the lunchtime footy match. The experience could actually help you work out who your real friends are. And remember, true friends are for life!

Your friend has been friend-napped
It's a classic case of someone stealing your best friend, huh? If your bestie can't manage to hang out with both of you equally, then sit her down and let her know how you're feeling. You could even suggest hanging out as a group — that way your friend can get the best of both worlds! And if your friend can't make time for you, maybe she wasn't a true friend anyway. The friend, who can be stolen, is better off with those who want to steal!

If there is a rumour going around about you
If a rumour has started it's probably because someone you know has slipped up and spread a lie about you — just to start controversy. Parts of the story can be exaggerated or sometimes completely made up! Putting you down is just a way to make themselves look and feel better. So if a rumour is spread about you, laugh it off with your friends. The message will soon get around, and the fibber will look super-stupid!

You both like the same boy
So you've noticed your friend is also pulling out some major hair-twirling action? Resist the urge to tell the boy about the time your friend farted in PE and put your friendship first. Even if this boy is Zac Efron's twin, always remember friends are forever and he is just a boy, after all. Take your friend aside for a chat and explain your feelings for the guy. If she still wants to play war, then have faith in the boy. If he really does like you, he won't be swayed by her.

If you, a friend or family member are being affected by bullying at school, make sure you tell a parent, teacher or counsellor.
