As Madonna tops the list as 2009's biggest fur offender, the question "To fur or not to fur?" remains a concept which is still troubling many of our fave celebs.
What is PETA?
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), released its ninth annual worst-dressed list, which names and shames those celebrities who have been caught wearing the opulent fabric during the past year.
Commenting on the Material Girl's style, the non-profit group didn't hold back, sniping, "When you see Madonna in fur, you realise why nobody has copied her style since 1984."
What's the history?
During the '90s fur crawled off London and New York catwalks in shame, following the high-profile "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign led by PETA and featuring a bevy of supermodels. However, it has now clawed its way back into the collections of designers all around the world.
Some celebrities still wear fur?
Of course, some celebrities just can't seem to make up their mind on the issue.
Who can forget November 2008 when Lindsay Lohan's brush with a very angry PETA activist in Paris resulted in her glamorous fur coat being pelted with flour? We can only hope this incident has at least made Lindsay think twice about her furry habits.
(If you missed this chuckle-worthy story, read it here.)
British singer Leona Lewis is outspoken about her anti-fur beliefs. "It's such an old-school way of doing things," she told Hello! magazine last year. "I can't begin to imagine that people who know all these animals have been killed to make a coat can still wear it. There must be something seriously wrong with them."
But Leona's not all talk; she turned down $2.4 million for the cause! Yep, Leona was offered the great sum of cash to open UK department store, Harrods, but because they still stock fur she said no way! Read more about it here.
So why all the fuss?
The fur trade has been well-publicised to be a violent and bloody industry far removed from the glamour of the fashion world. According to PETA, on fur farms in China (where most fur originate), minks, foxes, rabbits, and other animals are kept in tiny wire cages in all weather extremes. Being strangled, bludgeoned, and often skinned while still alive is the norm.
Often, fur is deliberately mislabelled and if you wear fur, there's no way to tell whose skin you're in. The truth is, who really knows what it is that's slung over your shoulders, or wrapped around your neck?
And now celebrities are turning on each other!
Reality star and socialite Kim Kardashian, recently decided to give up her fur habit. Why? Neither her sister Khloe nor her boyfriend, Reggie Bush, approved of her lavish collection. "I was wearing a fur vest," Kim told E!, "and [Reggie] was like, 'This is humiliating. I can't go out with you.' We were driving past the protest and he was rolling down the window and screaming, 'She's in here! She's in here!'"
Glamorous movie star, Eva Mendes went naked for the cause lending her face and body to the "Fur? I'd Rather Go Naked" campaign in 2007. At the time of the shoot Mendes said, "I look at my beautiful dog and think, 'Of course I'd never eat him or skin him for his fur, so why would I be okay with eating a cow or wearing a cheetah?' It's just not right. It's a contradiction.'" Eva told PETA, "I want people to know that there are options that killing a poor animal and wearing it isn't cool... respecting all life forms is cool".
If you want to get involved (unlike Eva, you're allowed to keep your clothes on!) or just learn more about animal cruelty, you can read up on the fur issue on PETA's website, www.peta.org.
