Five minutes with Zac Efron

Having recently wrapped filming the third instalment of the super-successful High School Musical movie series, 20-year-old Zac Efron has become one of Hollywood's hottest heartthrobs.

NYDC did a little digging to see what makes the star of Hairspray and upcoming indie flick Me and Orson Wells tick.

In my own high school days: "I really didn't have a clique; I was more of a floater. I tried to hang out with everyone. I had friends in all the groups."

I tried not to let peer pressure get to me at school: "All my extra-curricular activities were involved with performing, singing and dancing and theatre. Everyone [else] thought it was so cool to be a part of the basketball team … I just tried to follow what I really wanted to do."

I can't start my day without: "A nice long run."

The ultimate girl: "Should be really easy to talk to. When I lose track of time because we've been talking, I think that's really fun."

If I weren't acting, I'd be: "Surfing."

The musical I loved as a kid: "Definitely Grease; I love that and Singing in the Rain. Everyone has to go watch that movie; it's so magic."

My fave musician is: "Matt Costa. I love his CD. It's called Matt Costa: Songs We Sing. Great CD!"

On his Hairspray co-star John Travolta: "He's the coolest guy and just so down-to-earth and sane."

If I splurge on anything: "It's cologne. I love smelling good."

My coolest article of clothing: "Gucci aviators."

My ultimate co-star would be: "Reese Witherspoon or Catherine Zeta-Jones."

My advice to teenagers: "Try and do something that scares you every day because it's the only way you can test how far you can really go. Whether it's going out and auditioning for the play or trying out for the basketball team, you have to explore your boundaries and see where you really want to go and the only way you can do that is to break out of your shell."

On being described as the most popular guy in the world: "It kinda makes me worried that people will be disappointed when they meet me!"
