"I was forced to marry at 14"

Thursday, April 2, 2009
For Elissa, 22, her wedding day was one of the worst of her life. Brought up in a strict religious American cult she was made to submit to her husband "mind, body and soul".

As far back as she can remember Elissa was taught to ‘be sweet and obey’. Born into one of the strictest "church cults" in America - the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) – she was taught how to feel, speak, act and think by leader Rulon Jeffs and his son Warren.

She was expected to wear clothes that covered every inch of body and grow her hair long, while tattoos, body piercing, make-up, modern music and television were banned. She spent her spare time listening to sermons and was shut off from the outside world.

Elissa’s home life was also anything but normal. Her father had three wives and she grew up with 14 siblings and 10 half brothers and sisters. Having more than one wife was considered the norm in the FLDS. In fact, until Rulon Jeffs’ death in 2002, he was believed to have married 22 women, including two of Elissa's sisters, and fathered more than 60 children. His son, Warren, had more than 40 wives and 56 children.

For years Elissa followed this way of life without question until she turned 14 and was made to marry her 19-year-old cousin, Allen. Arranged marriages and incest were rife within the FLDS, but even at such a young age and despite all the brainwashing, Elissa knew it was wrong.

She begged everyone she knew not to let it happen but her prayers went unanswered and in April 2001 she was bound to her new husband 'for time and all eternity'.

"I clutched the delicate silk nightgown and embroidered robe of my bridal gown as I hurried to the bathroom. Though it was just a few feet from my bedroom, the bathroom seemed like a sanctuary, the one place I could be alone.

With a turn of the lock, I slid to my knees and leaned my back against the door – for the moment I was safe. Over the past several days, I’d cried myself out of tears, and now I felt strangely numb, unable to cope with what was going on.

When I’d awoken that morning, I was a fourteen-year-old girl hoping for the miracle of divine intervention; my prayers, however, had gone unanswered. With no other choice, I’d submitted to the will of our prophet and had married my nineteen-year-old first cousin. As a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), I’d been raised to believe that marriages were arranged through a revelation from God, and that these revelations were delivered through our prophet, who was the Lord’s mouthpiece on earth.

As a faithful follower, I’d embraced this principle and believed in it wholeheartedly, never imagining that at fourteen, a revelation would be made about me. I pictured my husband waiting for his bride, and the thought of sharing a bed with him terrified me. I had no idea what happened between a man and his wife in bed, and I didn’t want to find out …

Nausea overtook me, and I raced to the sink, digging my palms into its porcelain edge and trying not to vomit. Looking up, I caught sight of my red-rimmed eyes in the mirror. I had no idea how long I’d been in there, but I knew I had to leave the comfort of the bathroom. I knew these stolen minutes behind the locked door were my last solitude. From that time on, I would be the property of my husband, and would have to obey him completely. All I wanted to do is run to Mum’s room right next door and curl up beside her, but it couldn’t be done. I would always be her daughter, but I was no longer her little girl."

In the years that followed, Elissa’s husband, Allen, routinely abused her and forced her to have sex with him. When she sought help from church elders, she was told to submit like a dutiful wife. By the age of 17 she had sunk into deep depression, suffered four miscarriages and a stillborn child and even attempted suicide.

It wasn’t until she met fellow FLDS member, Lamont, that she found hope. He was having his own problems with the church and the pair fell in love and ran away together.

Once outside the confines of the church, Elissa decided to testify against new leader Warren Jeffs. Her evidence at his 2006 trial was enough to convict him of two counts of rape as an accomplice and sentence him to a minimum of 10 years in prison.

She now leads a relatively normal life with Lamont and their two children but she will never forget her stolen childhood and has vowed to help other young girls, such as her two sisters, escape the FLDS.

the FLDS are trying to keep the old belifes alive but most of what they teach isnt the real things about god and so forth. yes the REAL LDS did believe in marrying a few wifes but only did it so the widows could still have a life and a roof over the heads and help with the childern. the monster that did this n carried on this way of life wasnt called by god to do it and y doing it killed lots of young peoples chance at happiness he should rot in jail and so should all the people that did it b4 him. being a member of the REAL LDS church i know that these people dont talk to god in the way they showed and god sure as hell didnt tell them to let the husbands rape their wifes. since there is such a thing as rape in marrige....!!!!!!!
before you all go slamming me, I'm not like this guy. Never once did i say i supported it or implied that it wasnt sick. But my opinion doesnt matter in any of this, and neither does any of yours. But if the religion is still around now, and there's only pretty much one story about it, then maybe the followers or whatever they are, which is what i was saying before, really do think it's normal. And obviously this isnt a new religion or cult, and its ethics date back years.. and all those years ago it was normal. Go look at all your ancestors from ages back. its the exact same thing. Now quit being so judgemental and saying I'm like this guy. It doesn't matter what you think anyway
Your story is truly touching and amazing, however it is not the only one out there. One of my fathers sisters, got married to a man that belonged to one of these American cults. My story is also very similar. I came from a very strict and religious family who lived in Perth. My family attended church five times a week and my father went there every morning. Even though we were not part of one of the cults, my father and mother saved up so that we can move to America to be with my auntie and her cult. When I was 16 my family decided to leave for America, I refused but my father forced me to and as his daughter I had no choice to. When we got to the cult, I was immediately married to a young man, who secretly had the same dreams as to get out of this horrible life. A year after our marriage, we had our first child, and 6 months later we left the cult. Now I have moved back to Australia and and live happily with my husband and 3 children. I hope my story has inspired you to help.
pooooooor girl i cant believe that and omg !!!!! omg!!!!!! i really dont believe in crap!!! sorry to say this BUT THATS FOKED
anyone who believes in GOD are mentally ***. and even take in any sort of practices to preech or bless a imaginitive being which also concludes injustice acts like rape and forced marriages deserve to die. IMO be a realist not a exact atheist but close too. don't believe lies and also if i lived near any of these people i would set them straight myself. Good beats evil.. and atm Churches have evil intentions. not that good or evil being exist but rather a opinion of fact of whats right or wrong. thanx for reading Stoogie
theres to latter day saints churches out there theres her church as the fundamentalist church of latter day saints (flds) and then theres just the latter day saints. i use to go to church at the latter day saitns and it the most wonderful church out there. nothing like the other one. just rememeber that. theres so many differrent churches that have just poped up adn that must be one of them. its makes me sick.
hey melo and any1 out there like him, do really believe it is acceptable to treat some1 like that? this may be her religion but they violated her rights as a human being. firstly by forcing her to believe in their religion like that (taking away her freedom of choice - a basic human right) and secondly by making her marry her cousin despite her pleas and then turning a blind eye when he beat her and raped her. that is monstrous and extremely coldhearted. good on her for escaping! i hope she can get her siblings out of there too. PS i am also a 14 yo girl and have enough stress coping with homework! i dont think i could ever handle her situation so admirably.
Lizzie from Melbourne, just to let you know the ad's on TV are for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, not the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints. What they've done to this girl and countless others over the years is just horrifying.
hey I'm gonna tell u the truth well im younger than 14 but i do have a answer 2 well i have just red every bit of the story and i really thinks that terrible the poor kid! i really don't think its right for a family to do that im so happy she ran away with that man.
Think about it- Melo, Brisbane. If you read the words 'but even at such a young age and despite all the brainwashing, Elissa knew it was wrong.' that should tell you that even being bought up in that religion-lifestyle Elissa was not happy with, or accepting of, her fate - she knew it was wrong. Humans are amazing creatures, with a conscience. That is what makes us human - our conscience - the ability to tell right from wrong without being told.
