For the majority of her fans, the phenomenon that is Katy Perry began when she sang about kissing a girl. But as we found out, there is much more to this 24 year old rising superstar than her catchy songs and quirky outfits. And we like it! By Tenille Wright
Katy is Body Happy!
Katy gets the tick of approval from the DOLLY ‘Heart Your Body’ campaign. She embraces her healthy, curvy figure and loves her body the way it is, even though she used to get teased about her big boobs in high school!
"I had a very early development. I had big boobs for my age, and I was like, This is awkward! I look weird in the middle! And in ninth grade, I would literally be called Over-the-Shoulder-Boulder-Holder. I hated (my breasts) and I would tape them down and try to disguise them by wearing baggy things."
While she’s all for flirting up a storm, she’s very selective about who she’ll plant a kiss on
"For me, it’s not a past time, going out and meeting people and trying to hook up with people. That actually makes me feel disgusting. From a really early age, I was really sensitive to that. Getting your flirt on is the best thing in the world, but when it comes to sharing saliva with a person I don’t know - no thank you."
We can’t get enough of her quirky, unique and oh-so pretty style!
It’s not hard to see Katy has fun getting dressed up, as she channels everything from the 50’s era to a platter of sushi. Erm, that’s right, a platter of sushi! She’s not afraid to experiment and try new things, telling Women’s Health "I like experimenting, and I'm totally OK with ending up in the 'worst dressed.' It's happened many, many times, but I'm proud of those outfits."

Katy is eco conscious
Miss Perry is doing her bit for the environment and has stated on her MySpace page that while she is not a vegetarian she does drive a hybrid car. Every little bit helps we say!
She’s still grounded
Miss Perry doesn’t take her fame and fortune for granted. She knows she’s lucky to achieve what she has, referring to her top 3 'rock star' moments as eating dinner with Mick Jagger, having a release party for her album, and seeing a full-body tattoo of herself on a fan’s arm.
She’s so confident!
It’s pretty obvious you’ve got to have confidence to jump out of a giant clamn shell in front of thousands of people (see photo) but Katy is a fantastic role model when it comes to confidence. "If you're presenting yourself with confidence, you can pull off pretty much anything."
Her eclectic mix of musical inspirations
Her all time favourite artists are Beach Boys, Heart, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Alanis Morissette, Imogen Heap, Gwen Stefani, and Rufus Wainwright, but she maintains Queen is her biggest influence. Reflecting on her lightening bolt moment she said, "I wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music when I was a kid, but there was a time when I was hanging out at my friend’s house. We’re trying on all our outfits, like girls do, and out of nowhere I heard the lyrics to ‘Killer Queen’. Time stood still. The music was totally different from anything I’d heard. I still love Freddie Mercury".
She loves being different
On what separates her from other female artists Katy has said, "I want to push the envelope and I want to do something different and exciting and make people, keep them on their toes at all times". From banana skins to bellyflopping into a wedding cake (see next point), we've got to agree she's pushing the envelope indeed.

We just couldn’t leave this off. The girl deserves props for throwing herself face-first into a giant pink wedding style cake in front of her audience. She knows how to entertain her fans, in the past having appeared on stage as a Christmas tree, as well as ridden a giant lipgloss!
Random facts about Katy
- Her real last name is actually Katy Hudson, but she changed her last name to Perry as she thought people would confuse her with Kate Hudson. Perry is her mother’s maiden name.
- She grew up in a very religious household. Both her parents are pastors, and growing up she was only allowed to listen to Christian music. In fact, the first album she ever released was under a Christian label, and was a gospel rock album.
- Katy has been dating Gym Class Heroes front man Travis McCoy for several years on and off. They broke up in December last year but reunited again in April.
- Katy had a continuing spat with Lily Allen for several months last year, sparked after Katy said that she was a "skinnier version of Lily Allen".
