Thrush fears
What is thrush? I've heard of it, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. I'm scared I might have it. What can I do?

Thrush refers to an overgrowth of a yeast (a type of micro-organism) called Candida albicans. In women, Candida may live normally in the vagina without causing any problems, but when it overgrows, you can experience symptoms such as vaginal itch; a swollen, red, sore vagina; and a white, cheesy vaginal discharge. The vagina (like the skin and the intestines) plays host to lots of "good germs", including bacteria and yeasts. These organisms live harmoniously in these body parts and help keep harmful bacteria away. Overgrowth of Candida can happen if you're on antibiotics because these kill the "good" bacteria. Increased sweating in the genital area from wearing tight, synthetic underwear, pantyhose, and swimmers, can all contribute, as well as anything that alters the vagina's pH, including conditions like diabetes, or a diet high in sugar and caffeine.
Thrush is very common and is easily treated with over-the-counter preparations and can be prevented through a healthy balanced diet and keeping the vaginal area clean and dry.
