Pregnancy tests

Friday, July 13, 2007

Dear DOLLY DR, As a joke, me and my best friend took pregnancy tests and mine turned out positive — but I've never even had sex! What does this mean? Could I actually be pregnant? Alice.

If you've never had sex then you can't be pregnant. If you've had some sexual play with a guy and he has ejaculated near your genitals so that some semen was close to your vagina, then, although it's very unlikely, you could possibly still get pregnant. It's more likely that the pregnancy test you did was unreliable or out of date, or that you misread it. These days most home pregnancy tests are very accurate so it's all a bit mysterious. If you're in any doubt at all then you might want to talk to your doctor, or your mum or another adult.
