Dear DOLLY, I think I might have some kind of STI - maybe thrush. I have no idea, but my vagina sometimes gets really itchy and sometimes I have white/clear slimy liquid on my knickers, but then sometimes that liquid looks like discharge. What do you think it is? Anonymous, via email
Let's clear a couple of things up first. Thrush is not a sexually transmitted infection. It occurs when a yeast called "candida" that normally lives in the vagina, overgrows and causes symptoms.
It causes an itch, a white, cheesy vaginal discharge and sometimes redness and swelling of the vagina. It might make it sting when you pee because the area is inflamed and sore.
Thrush can be treated with over-the-counter creams, and can also be prevented by avoiding tight fitting, synthetic pants and undies, and by regularly eating yoghurt containing high concentrations of lactobacillus acidophilus.
A sexually transmitted infection on the other hand, is a possibility if you've had unprotected sexual contact (including oral sex) with an infected person. It's also possible to have an STI and thrush together.
Herpes is a virus that can cause vaginal itch and painful ulcers - and it can be caught from having unprotected oral sex with someone who has cold sores.
Another common STI is Chlamydia, which often causes no symptoms but can cause a vaginal discharge. The final piece of information regarding your symptoms is that while a white or clear liquid on your knickers might be normal, an itch is not.
So it's probably a good idea to get some medical advice, especially if you have been sexually active. Having sexual health check ups regularly - to discuss contraception, STI tests, and anything else that is important to you such as relationship issues - are a sign of a healthy, mature attitude to taking care of yourself and your partner.
You can seek advice about any of these issues confidentially. For more info on getting help for STIs check out www.getcluedup.com.au
