Bad dandruff

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Dear DOLLY DR, I have really bad dandruff and I can't get rid of it! I've tried everything and it just doesn't work. I do have quite dry skin and get really dry legs and hands. Can you please help me! Mia.

Dandruff is an extremely common skin condition of the scalp which can usually be controlled well by regularly using shampoos containing one of the following: zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, coal tar or selenium sulphide. It can also be made worse by covering the scalp frequently (with caps, helmets, scarves) so if possible keep that to a minimum.

Dandruff itself is not harmful — it can be itchy and lots of people don't like the look of it. If you have tried all the medicated shampoos available (check with your chemist regarding the list above), then you might want to visit your doctor for a further check. Some skin conditions, such as a type of eczema, or psoriasis, can cause dandruff-like flakes on the scalp and might need a different treatment. Your dry skin may or may not be related, so get it checked out..
