Ok so you lurrvvvveee music and you and your BFF rock around with your hair brushes all the time and sound awesome! But what does it really take to start a band? Can you and your bestie really start laying down some of your own tunes? Of course you can! We show you some of the cool things you can do to get started and talk to an awesome singer-songwriter who started a band with her best friend and they just released their first CD!
Probably the first thing you have to ask yourself is why you want to start a band. Some people do it because music totally rocks their world and they can't imagine doing anything else, while others just want to muck around and have fun. Both of these are pretty good reasons, whichever the case may be, there's some stuff you need to know before you get started.
You don't necessarily need to be a musical genius but playing an instrument does help and it is never too late to start. "I think it's very empowering to learn an instrument yourself and surround yourself with people that you have fun with and trust," says Sarah Aubrey of the cool Sydney band Girl Most Likely. Sarah started playing music with her best friend a few years ago and now has a full 4-piece band which just released its first CD!! How did she do it?
Sarah was having a really bad day when she picked up the guitar for the first time. "In order to teach myself the guitar I decided to start writing songs. And I had a lot of inspiration at the time cause I had a very broken heart," recalls Sarah. Like most people Sarah found it really scary to play her songs to other people, "when you write a song you put your heart on your sleeve for everyone to hear and judge." Sarah was lucky that her bestie was an awesome guitarist and by playing together she says that her songs really came to life.
So what do you need to think about before you get started?
1. Do you play an instrument or sing? Obviously if you are talented in the music department and so is your BFF this will help. But you don't have to be the world's greatest muso to sound good, you just need to be yourselves.
2. What kind of band do you want to be? A cool folky singing duo? Or do you see the two of you laying down some awesome electronic beats? You might even want to invite some of your other friends into the mix for a bigger sound.
3. Got a computer? You can do some amazing things with music software, so grab your laptop and start mucking around, you can download some cool music programs for free but make sure you do some research first and you might want to check with your parents.
4. Don't be afraid to try something new. If you don't play and instrument but have always liked the sound of the bass, well what is stopping you? Learning to play an instrument is lots of fun and will help with your sound. Learning more about musicology will also help you with your song-writing if you decide that is something you want to do.
Here's some of Sarah's advice for anyone looking to start a band and make their own music…
- "If you've got any friends who play instruments, grab them!"
- "Be true to yourself"
- "Be open to suggestions from the other members of the band"
- "Try not to have too big an ego"
- "Have fun and don't care what other people think."
Sarah's songs have been played on All Saints and Home and Away. You can check them out at Girl Most Likely on Myspace.
